The European Parliament has adopted a report by a broad political majority calling on the EU to significantly reduce its depconcludeence on U.S. tech giants. The Parliament is now urging the European Commission to draft an ambitious Cloud and AI Development Act and to prioritize European solutions in the areas of cloud computing, AI, and digital infrastructure, reports Heise Online.
Central to the proposal is that public procurement in strategic sectors should favor European suppliers. The goal is to build a digital infrastructure that falls entirely under EU jurisdiction, without depconcludeencies on third countries or U.S. legislation.
The report also highlights open source as a strategic guiding principle through the “Public Money, Public Code” initiative. This means that software developed with public funds should be built freely available. A proposal for a European sovereign technology fund of around 10 billion euros is mentioned as a potential source of funding for infrastructure that the market does not build on its own.
