Walmart slashes 568 Bay Area corporate jobs while building Arkansas mega-campus

Walmart reorganization impacts 568 jobs at Bay Area offices

Walmart will eliminate more than 560 positions across two Bay Area offices this August, marking one of the retailer’s largest regional workforce reductions since the pandemic reshaped its corporate footprint.

The cuts hit hardest at the company’s San Bruno e-commerce hub, where 388 workers received permanent layoff notices. Another 180 employees at the Sunnyvale office face the same fate starting Aug. 9, according to state regulatory filings.

Despite the scale, Walmart has left the door open for affected staff. Company filings indicate many workers can pursue other roles internally, and leadership expects a significant portion will either transfer or secure new positions within the organization.

Chief People Officer Donna Morris acknowledged the disruption in a staff memo circulated last week. “While the overall numbers are small in percentage, we are focused on supporting each of our associates affected by these changes,” she wrote.

The memo stopped short of naming a single cause. It referenced “changes” in certain business segments that made the reductions necessary.

Meanwhile, the retail giant is pushing forward with an ambitious return-to-office strategy. A new 350-acre campus under construction in Bentonville, Arkansas, signals Walmart’s broader effort to consolidate its corporate workforce at headquarters locations.

The Bay Area filings reveal another layer to the shift. Many employees listed in the layoff notices actually work remotely but remain assigned to the San Bruno office, a detail that complicates the relocation picture.

Morris framed the consolidation as a cultural imperative. “We believe that being together, in person, makes us better and helps us to collaborate, innovate and move even faster,” she stated.

As a result, workers face a choice: uproot to Arkansas, New Jersey, or other California hubs, or leave the company entirely. Walmart expects most will choose relocation.

The corporate restructuring arrives just days before another Bay Area blow. Walmart will shutter its Fremont retail store this Friday, eliminating 169 additional jobs in the East Bay. When combined, the company’s Bay Area workforce will shrink by roughly 730 positions within a single week.

The timing underscores Walmart’s aggressive realignment toward centralized operations and in-person collaboration, even as it absorbs the human cost of that transition.
