EU Trade Envoy Confronts Beijing Over $410 Billion Deficit

The European Union’s chief trade negotiator lands in Beijing this October for high-stakes talks aimed at reversing a trade shortfall that drains more than $1 billion from Europe every single day. Maroš Šefčovič will meet Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao over two days starting October 8.

The urgency stems from a yawning €360 billion deficit, roughly $410 billion, that has European officials increasingly alarmed. China holds the position of the EU’s second-largest trading partner. Meanwhile, the bloc’s political leadership has signaled readiness to abandon its traditionally cautious stance toward Beijing.

Brussels sees massive state subsidies and surging Chinese export volumes as direct threats to Europe’s core industrial base. The concern spans all 27 member states, where politicians and economists alike warn of potential factory closures and widespread job losses across strategic sectors.

As a result, Šefčovič previously set an October ultimatum. Beijing needed to produce concrete evidence of progress on narrowing the imbalance by that deadline. The upcoming meeting will test whether Chinese negotiators intend to offer meaningful concessions.

Wang’s response will shape the next phase of EU-China commercial relations. A failure to reach understanding could push Brussels toward defensive measures, including tariffs or quotas on targeted Chinese goods. The outcome in Beijing may determine whether Europe’s manufacturing heartland faces continued pressure or regains breathing room.
