87 Genentech scientists and analysts face permanent layoffs starting September

Genentech announces mass layoff at South San Francisco headquarters

Genentech is eliminating another 87 positions at its South San Francisco campus, deepening a restructuring that has now touched more than 700 jobs over 18 months.

The biotech firm notified California workforce officials last week through a WARN filing, the legally required heads-up for large-scale terminations. Layoffs begin Sept. 15 and stretch through January 2026.

The cuts hit across departments. Business analysts, data scientist-engineers, and multiple senior scientists all appear on the separation list. Genentech framed the move as permanent.

This latest reduction follows an August decision to close the company’s cancer immunology division. That shutdown erased 93 roles. Combined with other waves, the cumulative impact now exceeds 700 positions since early 2024.

Despite the shrinking headcount, Genentech’s parent company Roche keeps pumping cash into Bay Area research facilities and infrastructure. No statement arrived from Roche by press time.

The terminations underscore a biotech sector still recalibrating after pandemic-era overhiring. South San Francisco has absorbed repeated blows as drugmakers narrow their focus and trim pipeline bets.

Notice of the layoffs surfaced weeks before the first separation date, giving employees roughly two months of runway. Local workforce agencies will step in to assist displaced workers with benefits navigation and job placement services.

The company has not said whether more cuts loom later in 2026. For now, the September through January timeline marks one of Genentech’s longer multi-month separation windows in recent memory.
