$50m-backed Summize taps Brightflag co-founder for US expansion

$50m-backed Summize recruits Brightflag co-founder

Manchester LegalTech firm Summize has brought on Alex Kelly, co-founder of Brightflag, as a board adviser. The move lands just months after Summize secured a $50 million Series B round.

Kelly knows the territory firsthand. A qualified lawyer, he launched Brightflag in Dublin back in 2014 and served as chief operating officer through its decade-long climb. Wolters Kluwer ultimately acquired the company.

Summize founder and CEO Tom Dunlop pointed to Kelly’s track record as the deciding factor. Building a global LegalTech company from scratch gave Kelly exactly the kind of insight Summize needs for its next phase.

“Alex has taken a business down the exact road we’re on, and he knows the turns ahead,” Dunlop said.

Brightflag established its New York presence within its first year. Over the following ten years, Kelly and co-founder Ian Nolan scaled the operation into a legal operations leader. Dunlop noted the parallels between the two companies: LegalTech roots in Europe, a strong US footprint, mid-market focus, even overlapping customers.

Dunlop expects Kelly to deliver two things. First, practical experience navigating the growth path Summize now faces. Second, a fresh perspective from a different corner of legal tech, someone willing to challenge assumptions and push bigger thinking.

Kelly echoed the enthusiasm. “Delighted to be joining Summize as a board advisor,” he said, adding that he looks forward to helping corporate legal teams extract more value from their contracts.

Summize operates as an AI-powered contract lifecycle management provider. Its US expansion includes offices in Boston and San Diego. Kelly’s arrival signals the company’s intent to double down on that transatlantic growth story.
