$628 million liquidated in one hour as Binance hack drags Bitcoin to $76,650

After Binance Hack, Bitcoin Falls as Low as $76,650

A single security breach has reignited panic across digital asset markets, dragging Bitcoin to a six-week low of roughly $76,650 overnight. The record-setting theft at Binance sent shockwaves through trading floors, though the world’s largest cryptocurrency clawed back some ground to hover near $78,500 by Friday morning.

The fallout arrives at a fragile moment. Traders already faced jitters from the Federal Reserve’s rate decision and a bruising 12 percent single-day plunge in Google shares. As a result, risk appetite had thinned considerably before the exchange breach ever made headlines.

When news of the hack surfaced Thursday evening European time, prices tumbled within hours. Bitcoin dropped more than 4 percent, ether slid beyond 5 percent, and Solana shed nearly 6 percent. BNB, the token tied to the compromised exchange, suffered the steepest blow. It briefly touched $692 and remains down almost 5 percent.

Leveraged bulls absorbed the worst damage. CoinGlass data shows roughly $628 million in positions were force-liquidated during the first hour alone, nearly all of them long bets. Total liquidations swelled to about $1.5 billion, according to CoinDesk, including $468 million in Bitcoin and $358 million in ether.

Yet the theft itself carries limited direct weight. The stolen Bitcoin amounts to a sliver of the overall market cap, and about $3 billion has already been frozen. The real damage stems from sentiment. When the largest exchange pauses withdrawals, investors flash back to FTX’s 2022 collapse.

Meanwhile, a few assets bucked the downturn. Hyperliquid’s HYPE token jumped 18 percent after ICE, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, revealed a partnership with the Trade[XYZ] platform. Tron, Zcash, and Bitcoin Cash also posted modest 24-hour gains.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index tumbled from a neutral 51 to 30, signaling fear. Standard Chartered’s Geoffrey Kendrick expects further losses, pointing to $76,300 as key support. A daily close below that level would mark the first clean break in six weeks. Binance could stabilize conditions by resuming withdrawals and publishing fresh proof of reserves.
