A sweeping decarbonization push across Brazil’s port network now aligns with environmental standards tied to the Mercosur–European Union trade pact, positioning the country’s maritime gateways for a low-carbon commercial future.
That alignment arrives as the EU tightens rules affecting global shipping and trade. Vessels calling at European ports face escalating carbon reduction targets, requirements for shore-side electric power, and inclusion in emissions pricing systems. Meanwhile, sustainability traceability demands increasingly shape which supply chains gain market access.
Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) launched its Sustainability Policy in 2025. A companion initiative, the Pact for Sustainability, has drawn participation from more than 30 companies. Participating firms can earn official recognition plus procedural advantages, including priority project analysis and monitoring during environmental licensing.
Major port complexes now showcase concrete projects. Suape in Pernambuco will host Latin America’s first fully electric container terminal after receiving investments exceeding R$2 billion. Santos has deployed Onshore Power Supply technology, letting docked ships draw electricity from shore rather than burning diesel. Paranaguá pairs expanded rail capacity with solar generation. Pecém pushes ahead on green hydrogen and ammonia while Açu develops low-carbon fuel corridors.
Minister Tomé Franca framed the effort as a competitiveness strategy. “The transition to more sustainable logistics is a global movement, and Brazilian ports need to be prepared for this scenario,” he said.
Beyond individual facilities, Brazil and partners including Norway and the Netherlands have advanced work on sustainable maritime corridors connecting South America to Europe. Feasibility studies continue after a 2025 memorandum of understanding. The concept has also surfaced in Brazilian proposals at G20, BRICS, and COP30 forums, signaling an ambition to embed port sustainability within broader trade diplomacy.
