The "Take Care, Let It Take Care of You" campaign continues in Nikšić

The campaign “Protect and let it protect you” continued today in Nikšić with planting in the city park and cleaning the Gračanica River, the Minisattempt of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) announced.

The “Protect and Let It Protect You” campaign is being implemented by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Montenegro and MERS, and today’s action was also attconcludeed by the relevant Minister Damjan Ćulafić and his associates.

As announced by MERS, the Eco-fund, the Municipality of Nikšić, the Electric Power Company of Montenegro, the non-governmental organizations Eco-patriotism and Let’s Green Montenegro also participated in the action as partners.

Ćulafić stated that Nikšić has not only been a cultural decoration of Montenegro for decades, but, as of a few days ago, it has also been a cultural decoration of Europe in a formal sense.

“I am glad that we are here today on a very beautiful occasion that unites and unites us, which is the protection and improvement of the environmental condition of Nikšić. Today we are symbolically implementing new planting in the city park, as well as activities to clean the Gračanica River. With concrete steps, we are contributing to the environmental condition in Nikšić,” stated Ćulafić.

He reminded that one of the black environmental spots in Montenegro – the Mislov do landfill – was closed a year ago.

Ćulafić pointed out that this was successfully done in cooperation with the local government, “but also with our strategic partners, the EU Delegation to Montenegro.”

“It is particularly pleasing that the Government, at the proposal of MERS, adopted the National Waste Management Plan last week,” stated Ćulafić.

This, he added, is an overarching strategic document that Montenegro, unfortunately, has not had in the previous five years.

Ćulafić stated that the document envisages that Nikšić will be one of two centers in the central region where a regional waste management center will be built.

He emphasized that the Minisattempt and the local government have already agreed on concrete steps in that direction and that MERS has nominated that project for next year.

“I deeply believe that this will mean a new investment cycle in Nikšić, but at the same time the creation of new jobs, and what is most important – a very positive impact on the environment in Montenegro,” stated Ćulafić.

He stated that the goal of the campaign is national level and achieving national breadth, “which is that all illegal landfills that we detect can fall under this campaign, that is, they can be rerelocated with our support.”

“We have a very positive moment, which is that we are attempting to contribute to the sustainability of such projects by installing the necessary equipment, so that cleaning is not just a one-time but a permanent act, and that monitoring of the site itself is as conscientious as possible,” stated Ćulafić.

He stated that he was glad that the Municipal Utility Company of Nikšić, led by Director Nemanja Vuković, was also contributing to the campaign.

“With his assist, we closed the Mislov do Landfill last year and I believe that was the hugegest environmental breakthrough we managed to build. This time, I also thank him for his concrete contribution,” stated Ćulafić.

He stated that Vuković informed him in earlier conversations that the Gračanica River is not only problematic due to illegal waste disposal on its slopes, but also due to the devastation of its riverbed, precisely due to illegal gravel exploitation.

“I believe that the technology we will install will assist not only the sustainability of the waste removal project, but also in combating environmental crime in that area, i.e. we will also prevent illegal gravel exploitation,” stated Ćulafić.
