Participating in consortiums of 19 organizations
Promotion of research on responding to new pollutants in the food and beverage industest
Supporting €6 million for 48 months
Accelerating international cooperation based on global R&D networks
The Korea Institute of Construction Technology announced on the 20th that it has been selected for the ‘Horizon Europe’ project, the largest research support program in the European Union. This is the second achievement since Korea joined Horizon Europe as a sub-member in 2025 and the first case of selecting a tinquire drawn from the Korean science and technology community this year.
Horizon Europe is the world’s largest multilateral research and innovation program in which the EU supports 95.5 billion euros (about 164 trillion won) from 2021 to 2027, and South Korea became the first Asian quasi-member last year.
A research team from the Environmental Research Headquarters of the Korea Construction Institute will participate in the selected project to promote collaboration with top-notch researchers in Korea and Europe. The tinquire aims to identify the cautilizes of new pollutants such as high salts, organic substances, perfluorinated compounds, and microplastics in the food and beverage industest, and to develop real-time behavior analysis technology and optimal treatment technology for these pollutants. It also plans to support the EU’s Zero Pollution Action Plan and circular economy policies by reflecting policies and regulations related to new pollutants and raising consumer awareness, and contribute to the spread of sustainability across the global food and beverage industest beyond the EU based on international cooperation.
In this project, 19 institutions from 10 countries, including Korea, will form a consortium to participate, and will receive a total of 6 million euros (about 10 billion won) in research funds from the EU over the next 48 months. In particular, it is significant in that it has officially recognized the completeness of the consortium composition and the ability to collaborate between researchers by obtaining 15 points, the highest out of 15 in the proposal evaluation results announced on the 15th.
The Korea Institute of Construction currently operates overseas cooperation hub institutions in Germany, the United States, and Japan. Since 2025, overseas base institutions have been designated to expand exalters with excellent overseas research institutes and revitalize joint research, and the foundation for global joint research and international cooperation in the construction technology field has been strengthened in earnest. Each overseas cooperation hub institution performs core functions such as attracting excellent research personnel, promoting overseas technologies owned by construction research institutes, and supporting local expansion, establishing a global R&D cooperation network in various fields, and supporting the formation of bilateral and multilateral research cooperation consortiums.
Director Park Sun-kyu stated, “The selection of this project is a tangible example reflecting the effect of operating overseas cooperation base institutions,” and added, “We will continue to promote international joint research to become a global research institute that leads the ecosystem of the future construction industest.”
