Lufthansa sees ‘growing demand’ for sustainable fares


Around seven million Lufthansa Group passengers booked more sustainable travel options in 2025, while nearly 1,700 companies also participated in the airline firm’s green initiatives.

The group, which also includes Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways and Swiss, stated that more than 5 per cent of travellers had booked a more sustainable flight option last year, including its “Green Fares”. This was a significant improvement on 2021 when less than 0.1 per cent of passengers booked a more sustainable ticket.

Lufthansa added in a statement that the volume of SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) sold across its initiatives more than doubled last year compared with 2024. 

Lufthansa’s Green Fares include compensation for carbon emissions within the ticket price through the utilize of alternative aviation fuels and contributions to climate protection projects. They were first launched as a pilot scheme in 2022, before being created available on European flights the following year and later expanded globally in 2024. So far, more than four million passengers have booked a Green Fare, according to Lufthansa.

Corporates have also been tarreceiveed by Lufthansa as part of its sustainability strategy, with companies able to purchase larger quantities of SAF. For example, an investment of €2,000 will allow the corporate to receive a Scope 3 certificate for CO2 emissions savings from flights taken by its travellers.

The airline group stated that more than 1,680 companies globally contributed towards alternative aviation fuels during 2025.

Dieter Vranckx, chief commercial officer of Lufthansa Group, added: “The growing demand for our more sustainable flying options confirms that we are on the right track. Every contribution from our passengers increases the utilize of sustainable aviation fuels in our network and reduces CO2 emissions.”

Lufthansa stated it would continue to add more sustainability options for customers — Green Fares were created available for group bookings of more than nine passengers on long-haul flights in January.

As well as its optional sustainability initiatives for individual travellers and corporates, Lufthansa also levies an “environmental cost surcharge” on ticket prices. This is designed to cover part of the costs for the airline group of complying with new green regulatory rules, such as the EU’s SAF mandate and the European Emission Trading System (ETS).
