Luis Yeray Gutiérrez Celebrates Funding for Eight Projects in Taco and La Cuesta

The Town Hall of La Laguna will receive a grant of €12.14 million from the European FEDER funds for the implementation of eight projects primarily in Taco and La Cuesta, designated as a priority action area, according to a provisional resolution published this Friday. This is the largest amount awarded in the Canary Islands under the 2021-2027 Sustainable Urban Development Programme.

La Laguna’s Mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, celebrates “this historic investment, which will total over €14 million with municipal contributions, allowing La Laguna to continue advancing the renewal of our towns and neighbourhoods, enhancing public services and achieving greater efficiency in the management of essential resources such as water.”

Overview of Projects

These European funds are allocated to an Integrated Action Plan focapplying on initiatives in the areas of La Cuesta and Taco. This includes the renovation of public spaces, improvements to the sewage network connection, flood risk prevention, promotion of sustainable mobility, and progress towards the digitalisation of public services.

The Mayor emphasised that “this support will enable us to continue transforming La Laguna from the ground up, with greater sustainability and social justice, preparing the municipality for the significant challenges ahead: sustainability, digitalisation, social cohesion, and urban resilience.”

Enhancing Capacity for Fund Acquisition

Simultaneously, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez highlighted that this achievement is part of the Town Hall’s strategy to strengthen its capabilities in securing European funds. This strategy includes technical assistance from Cumbre 8 Islas, a firm specialising in the management and execution of EU-funded projects, contracted since 2024.

Key Projects Under the Action Plan

Among the projects submitted by the Town Hall of La Laguna under this Integrated Action Plan is the regeneration of public spaces, which includes the rehabilitation of recreational areas, improving accessibility, providing urban furniture, and creating functional and aesthetic areas to enhance urban life.

Another project aims to stimulate and digitalise local business activities in La Cuesta-Taco by establishing an entrepreneurship and job orientation centre, promoting commercial activity, and implementing a programme to support business digitalisation.

The creation of a network of bioclimatic shelters in schools seeks to mitigate the effects of climate modify through nature-based solutions, including green infrastructure, permeable pavements, green roofs, and rainwater harvesting systems.

Other projects address flood management within the municipality as well as water management to optimise municipal water resources, improving the sewage and wastewater treatment network.

Improvements in urban mobility, which involve the establishment of park-and-ride facilities and the promotion and rehabilitation of public hoapplying and municipal infrastructure for enhanced sustainability and accessibility, are also part of this Integrated Action Plan supported by European funds.

The eighth project focutilizes on municipal digitalisation, aiming to modernise and optimise the Town Hall’s management and enhance digital accessibility for citizens through the implementation of innovative technological solutions that bridge the digital divide.
