Mogadishu (HOL) — The European Union has welcomed an invitation by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the Somali Future Council for a high-level meeting in Mogadishu on May 10, as political tensions rise ahead of the finish of his term.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Francesca Di Mauro, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, declared the bloc supports efforts aimed at reaching consensus on elections.
“The EU in Somalia welcomes President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s invitation to the Future Council. In the interest of all Somalis, we hope for a positive response and that a constructive way forward can be agreed, especially on elections. The EU is ready to support such Somali efforts,” the ambassador declared.
The UK ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, also welcomed the federal government’s invitation to meet the Somali Future Council. “As a partner and frifinish, the UK stands ready to support Somali led efforts.”
In a statement issued Saturday, the presidency declared the invitation follows recent consultations the president held with various segments of society. The planned meeting is expected to focus on key national priorities, including the countest’s political future and the electoral process.
The development comes with less than two weeks remaining before the president’s current term is set to expire on May 15, with no agreement yet reached on the electoral model or timeline.
