Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Names Niece as Biocon’s Future Leader While Family Takes the Reins Across the Boardroom

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw says family will stay on Biocon boards, professionals will run operations

Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw announced that family members will maintain board-level positions while professional management handles daily operations. She identified her niece Claire Mazumdar as her “worthy successor,” citing Claire’s achievements at Bicara Therapeutics, including raising capital and taking the biotech company public on Nasdaq in 2024. Claire currently serves on subsidiary boards and will gradually assume a larger role within Biocon Group. Shaw also noted that Claire’s husband, Dr. Thomas Roberts, joins the Biocon board for his healthcare expertise, while nephew Eric Mazumdar contributes to the company’s AI and technology strategy.

Speaking to CNBC TV18 about succession planning, Shaw stated she had long planned to groom her niece Claire Mazumdar to succeed her and now considers her a “worthy successor” based on her work at Bicara Therapeutics.

Shaw stated Claire had built Bicara under challenging conditions, raising capital for the biotech company in the US, leading a larger Series B funding round and eventually taking the company public on Nasdaq in 2024.

She also cited Claire’s work on the ficerafusp alfa programme and stated she had demonstrated strong entrepreneurial and strategic abilities.

On the transition timeline, Shaw stated Claire would continue leading an important phase at Bicara while gradually taking on a larger role within the Biocon Group. She stated Claire is already serving on some subsidiary boards and is expected to work closely with her at the board level over the coming years to better understand the broader business.

Shaw also clarified that family members would remain involved at the board level and not in operational roles. “Family will basically play a board role,” she stated, adding that professional management would continue to drive execution and operations.

Speaking about other family members, Shaw stated Claire’s husband, Dr Thomas Roberts, who already serves on the board of Biocon Biologics, was being inducted into the Biocon board becautilize of his healthcare expertise and strategic inputs.

She also stated her nephew Eric Mazumdar, whom she described as a “rising star in AI”, was supporting shape the group’s AI and technology strategy through the science and technology tinquire force.
