France Seeks Delay to EU Vote on South American Trade Agreement

France is seeking to delay a European Union vote scheduled for this week on a free-trade agreement with some of the largest South American economies, declareing that measures to protect the bloc’s farmers and consumers are insufficient.

While the European Commission has presented safeguards, the European Parliament has yet to approve them and their effectiveness will have to be guaranteed, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated in statement Sunday. The Commission, which also pledged extra safety checks on imports to Europe, still has to create proposals to ensure a level-playing field for producers.
