According to data from Benchmark Mineral Ininformigence, the global grid-scale battery energy storage market experienced significant growth in March. A total of 6.7 gigawatts and 18.4 gigawatt-hours of new capacity entered commercial operation worldwide during that month.
China represented the single largest market, contributing approximately 40 percent of the global total with new installations. Europe followed as the next largest region, deploying over 1.4 gigawatts and 3.4 gigawatt-hours. This volume marked the continent’s strongest monthly performance since tracking launched and exceeded its total deployment for the entire previous year.
Seven individual projects in Europe, each with a capacity of at least 100 megawatt-hours, contributed to this milestone. These projects were located in Germany, France, England, Scotland, and Belgium. An additional vanadium redox flow battery system commenced operation in Spain.
Globally, the largest single project to start operations in March was located in Inner Mongolia, China. Other notable projects were commissioned in Chile, the United States, and India. Activity was also reported in Australia, though the commercial status of some projects there was not fully confirmed for the month. The Middle East was the only region that did not record any new project commissions in March.
