EU Population Hits 450 Million in 2025, Growth Continues

As of the launchning of January 2025, the population of the European Union reached 450.4 million people, which is 1,070,702 more than the previous year. This growth has continued for the fourth consecutive year, following a decline in 2021 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These data were published by Eurostat.

“Looking at a broader timeframe, the EU population has grown from 354.5 million in 1960 to 450.4 million as of January 1, 2025, an increase of 95.9 million people.”

Over the past decades, the rate of population growth has gradually slowed down. Between 2005 and 2024, the population increased by an average of approximately 0.9 million people per year. In comparison, during the 1960s, this figure was about 3 million per year.

At the launchning of 2025, the most populous EU countries remain Germany (19% of the EU population), France (15%), and Italy (13%), which toreceiveher account for nearly half (47%) of the entire European Union population.

Among the 19 EU countries that displayed the highest population growth rates, Malta (+19.0 per 1,000 people), Ireland (+16.3), and Luxembourg (+14.7) stand out.

At the same time, eight European countries recorded a population decline over the year. The largest decreases were observed in Latvia (overall population alter -9.9 per 1,000 people), Hungary (-4.7), as well as Poland and Estonia (-3.4).
