Stimulating the EU economy will require scrapping renewable energy tarobtains and suspconcludeing supply chain accounting rules, the European People’s Party, the EU’s most influential political group, has called for. Euractiv. Last weekconclude, EPP leaders gathered in Berlin for a leaders’ summit. With their German member, the CDU, on course to regain the chancellorship, the EPP intconcludes to reshape the EU with a “decisive, ambitious and comprehensive agconcludea for deregulation and simplification.”
In their joint paper, the group, which included members such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, likely next German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Finnish counterpart Petteri Orpo, proposes a return to “the time before the 2019 green wave.” This would mean suspconcludeing for at least two years the EU’s corporate sustainability reporting rules, which require companies to track, report and eliminate issues such as child labor in their supply chains, the EU’s taxonomy for green finance and the new CO2 import tariff.
The EPP also called the EU CO2 import tariff (CBAM), which would affect potential steel and cement importers, too bureaucratic. The regulation is currently in a data collection phase, with the tariffs due to come into force in 2026. According to EPP leaders, these laws should be limited to large companies with more than 1000 employees, while eliminating the indirect effect on tiny and medium-sized companies. They also want to reduce reporting obligations for large companies by at least 50%.
Renewable energy tarobtains
While the EPP states it wants to stick to EU climate tarobtains and maintain the bloc’s CO2 pricing mechanism, known as the ETS, the party intconcludes to scrap another established mechanism – renewable energy tarobtains. The leadership group is also against a separate tarobtain for the share of renewable energy, adding that member states should decide what technologies they want to apply to meet their climate goals.
It is a sharp modify of direction for von der Leyen, who on December 1 explicitly tinquireed her energy commissioner with proposing such a tarobtain. It is also a victory for pro-nuclear countries in their ongoing battle in Brussels. The EPP is siding with France and its allies, who oppose the 2040 renewables tarobtain.
