eBay Slashes 1,000 More Jobs Eight Months After Axing 800 Roles

eBay to cut about 1,000 jobs in latest Bay Area tech layoffs

Bay Area tech giant eBay will slash another 1,000 positions, roughly 9% of its workforce, as the online marketplace doubles down on restructuring efforts targeting its fastest-growing segments.

The layoffs mark the company’s second major workforce reduction in under a year. CEO Jamie Iannone detailed the decision in an internal memo, which Reuters obtained and reported first. A company spokesperson confirmed the cuts Wednesday.

Employees affected by the move will receive notification within days, according to Iannone’s message.

The latest round follows a January purge of approximately 800 jobs, or 6% of staff. Annual filings show eBay employed 12,300 workers at the close of 2025.

Strategic priorities have shifted toward authenticated luxury items, collectibles, and refurbished goods. The company also chases younger demographics through platforms like Depop, the secondhand fashion marketplace eBay acquired in July. Depop continues operating as a standalone brand while tapping eBay’s infrastructure.

Meanwhile, executives channel investment into artificial intelligence and marketplace technology aimed at improving the experience for both buyers and sellers.

The workforce contraction extends a pattern under Iannone, who took the helm in 2020. Previous reductions included 500 positions eliminated in 2023 and another 1,000 cut in 2024. As a result, eBay’s headcount has dropped steadily while leadership repositions the company for what it sees as higher-margin, higher-growth categories.
