Netflix slashes 494 California jobs despite posting 87 percent profit surge

Netflix plans hundreds of layoffs at Bay Area headquarters

Netflix will cut nearly 500 positions across two California hubs, according to state employment filings made public this week.

The Los Gatos headquarters accounts for 227 eliminated roles, while a separate notice covers 267 jobs in Los Angeles. Together, these two filings total 494 layoffs within the Golden State. The workforce reduction forms part of a sweeping 1,000-person purge that Netflix unveiled last week, a move that trims its global staff by roughly 6% and stands as the company’s deepest round of cuts ever.

Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters told employees in an internal memo that product, technology, legal, and human resources teams would absorb the heaviest blows.

The layoffs arrive during a broader restructuring of Netflix’s content division. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria departed the company as part of the shakeup. Former Disney and 21st Century Fox executive Peter Rice stepped into her role. Film chief Dan Lin also lost his job.

Meanwhile, Netflix keeps pouring cash into original programming. Upcoming releases this quarter include “East of Eden,” a fourth season of “The Diplomat,” and the final season of “Emily in Paris.” The streamer also debuted “La Bola Negra” (“The Black Ball”), a Spanish-language drama following three gay men across the early 20th century, the Spanish Civil War, and the present day.

That $15 million production pulled in $313,391 over the weekend through Monday from just four theaters. Netflix revealed those box office figures publicly for the first time, breaking with its long-standing practice of keeping theatrical numbers confidential.

Financial results remain strong. Third-quarter revenue hit $12.87 billion, up 12% from a year prior, while profit surged 87% to $3.66 billion.

Investors have nevertheless voiced growing unease about decelerating subscriber growth in the United States and Canada along with uncertain advertising momentum. The company last conducted major layoffs in 2022, eliminating about 450 roles over two rounds. Regulatory filings show Netflix employed around 16,000 people worldwide at the end of 2025.
