€3 Billion Fuels Europe’s Largest AI Bet on Data Sovereignty

Making sovereign, open-weight AI the technology frontier

Paris-based AI developer Mistral just secured €3 billion in fresh funding, pushing its valuation past €21 billion and setting a new record for the largest equity raise by any European tech company in the continent’s history.

The Series D round arrives just three years after Mistral’s founding and signals mounting investor conviction that a European challenger can compete with American and Chinese AI giants.

Samsung Electronics anchored the financing, with EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and existing backer PSG Equity serving as co-leads. A sprawling coalition of new and returning investors joined, including BlackRock-managed funds, Luxembourg’s sovereign wealth vehicle, Advent, and prior supporters like Andreessen Horowitz, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures, and Bpifrance.

Mistral plans to channel the capital into frontier research, compute infrastructure, and international commercial expansion. The company now operates in 20 countries and counts Airbus, ASML, and HSBC among the 125-plus enterprises deploying its technology for mission-critical work.

The funding reflects a strategic shift in enterprise AI demand. Organizations and governments no longer ask simply who builds the most powerful model. They want to know how to harness generative AI without surrendering control over data, infrastructure, and the feedback loops that improve systems over time.

Mistral’s pitch centers on sovereignty. Its stack spans open-weight models, dedicated compute capacity, and production-ready products, allowing customers to avoid vendor lock-in across pricing, roadmaps, or availability. Data stays within organizational boundaries, models remain customizable, and deployed systems stay auditable.

That positioning has attracted backing from industrial heavyweights. Samsung’s participation follows a Series C led by ASML, Europe’s semiconductor equipment leader. Together, the two rounds represent a bet that Mistral’s open, full-stack approach can win in complex real-world environments where control matters as much as performance.

As a result, Mistral now stands alone as Europe’s best-funded pure-play AI startup, with the firepower to challenge frontier labs on research while scaling deployment across regulated industries worldwide.
