Global markets climbed Tuesday while oil prices tumbled nearly $2 per barrel, a split driven by fresh Middle East diplomacy signals and a wave of artificial intelligence funding news that emboldened equity investors ahead of major tech earnings.
The buying momentum carried the MSCI all-country world index up 0.59 percent to 1,129.74. Meanwhile, traders positioned for a pivotal week, with the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan all scheduled to announce rate decisions. Economists widely expect all three to hold borrowing costs steady.
Investors also tracked diplomatic maneuvering in the Middle East. Iran’s security chief met with the supreme leader following talks with Saudi, Turkish, and Pakistani representatives. The discussions fueled speculation about a potential resolution, which pressured crude futures even as shipping disruptions kept prices near multimonth highs. US crude settled at $99.90 a barrel, down 1.83 percent, while Brent dropped 1.67 percent to $113.88.
A flurry of AI-related announcements provided the spark for equities. Meta, SpaceX, and Broadcom disclosed financing activity, and Anthropic revealed its initial public offering filing. The news helped lift rate-sensitive small caps, with the Russell 2000 advancing 1.2 percent for a second consecutive session.
“The AI news gave headway to the bulls and got the bond market settled. That’s been supporting and we’ve seen small caps perform better,” said Sahak Manuelian, managing director at Wedbush Securities. He added that Middle East peace talk chatter, however uncertain, acted as “a tailwind for stocks” through lower crude prices.
On Wall Street, the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.18 percent to 26,477.81. The S&P 500 added 0.60 percent to finish at 7,722.60. The Dow Jones Industrial Average barely moved, rising 16 points to 52,377.57.
Attention now shifts to earnings reports from Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet. These hyperscalers face pressure to demonstrate that their enormous AI infrastructure spending produces tangible returns. Their results could also shape investor appetite for the Anthropic IPO and Meta’s $95 billion equity raise.
Treasury yields edged higher as markets weighed the possibility of a December rate increase. The 10-year note yielded 4.999 percent, while gold climbed 1.09 percent to $4,060.29 an ounce. The dollar strengthened modestly against the euro, yen, and sterling.
As central banks hold their fire this week, the AI earnings narrative and any concrete Middle East peace progress will likely determine whether this rally extends.
