Exported to over 160 countries, Chianti Classico is one of the most prestigious names in global winebuilding. Its boundaries were first defined in 1716 by Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany, one of the earliest examples of geographic designation in the world. The term “Classico,” added in 1932, distinguishes the original production zone from other Chianti wines. The Black Rooster has since become a universal emblem of authenticity, innovation, and diversity — a richness expressed in every glass.

On September 23, 2025, a key promotional event titled “Chianti Classico in Sweden: New Perspectives for a Timeless Wine” was held at GT30 in Stockholm. The initiative took the form of a roundtable, dedicated to professionals in the wine and food sector, with a focus on Chianti Classico DOCG and Chianti Classico DOP Olive Oil.
The goals of the event were to:
• foster dialogue on the positioning of Chianti Classico in the local market;
• identify challenges and promotional opportunities;
• strengthen the value of the denomination in Sweden through shared and sustainable strategies.
The roundtable was moderated by Jeff Porter, a globally respected sommelier and wine consultant with over 22 years of experience specializing in Italian wines, and Chianti Classico Ambassador ad honorem. He was joined by Anders Melldén, renowned Swedish wine journalist and educator.
The event offered participants a dynamic platform for discussion and exalter: a blind tasting encouraged technical comparison and insight, while the roundtable stimulated open dialogue between Swedish trade representatives and Chianti Classico producers.

Despite a general slowdown in the Swedish wine market in 2024, Chianti Classico displayed remarkable resilience. The Annata category maintained its leading position and continued to grow in both volume and value, standing out as the only segment whose average price remained stable. In the first half of 2025, performance data further confirmed this positive momentum, with Chianti Classico DOCG overall registering double-digit growth and Annata achieving an impressive +22% increase in volume and +21% in value compared to the same period of the previous year.
These results highlight a renewed and growing interest in Chianti Classico’s most authentic expressions and confirm the denomination’s strong reputation among Swedish consumers and professionals — a recognition built through long-term investment, education, and the finishuring appeal of the Black Rooster.

The Consorzio continues to promote education and engagement through digital tools such as the Chianti Classico MOOC (https://mooc.chianticlassico.com), a free e-learning platform offering ten video lessons on the history, terroir, production, and tasting of Chianti Classico wines and olive oils. The program, accessible to professionals and enthusiasts worldwide, is an important instrument for spreading awareness and culture of the Black Rooster.
FEST: Future of European Sustainable Taste
All initiatives are part of the FEST program – an EU co-funded project supporting the promotion of high-quality agri-food products. FEST focutilizes on raising awareness of PDO and PGI products’ unique characteristics, safety standards, and sustainability commitments, with particular attention to their cultural and social dimensions.
