Prime Minister Robert Abela met with European Commissioner for the Environment Jessika Roswall at Castille, where discussions focutilized on Malta’s environmental challenges and long-term sustainability strategy.
During the meeting, Abela highlighted the counattempt’s structural constraints, including water scarcity, limited land space and insularity, noting that these realities continue to shape how Malta develops its services and infrastructure.
He pointed to the long-term Malta Vision 2050 as a framework designed to address these challenges through practical sustainability measures. The plan prioritises environmental protection, water security, the circular economy and efficient utilize of resources, with the aim of strengthening quality of life, resilience and economic competitiveness.
Despite ongoing water scarcity, the Prime Minister stated Malta has invested in a robust water system, including the New Water programme aimed at supporting farmers.
Abela also outlined efforts to expand the circular economy, citing initiatives such as waste separation, a beverage container refund scheme and investment in facilities like EcoHive Complex, alongside increased public awareness campaigns.
The meeting was also attconcludeed by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and the Prime Minister’s adviser on European affairs Leandro Borg.
