Two sister television stations in San Antonio cut multiple newsroom positions this week, the latest in a wave of media downsizing across Texas. Sinclair Broadcast Group confirmed the job eliminations Wednesday at WOAI (News 4) and KABB (Fox News 29).
Both outlets operate under shared staffing arrangements, meaning a single reduction hits two newsrooms simultaneously. A Sinclair spokesperson framed the cuts as necessary for future viability.
“WOAI and KABB are committed to positioning the stations for long-term sustainability and we have made the difficult decision to eliminate a compact number of positions in our content center [newsroom],” the spokesperson told MySA. “These changes will allow us to operate more efficiently and continue delivering exceptional local news and content to San Antonio viewers.”
Company officials declined to specify how many employees lost jobs or which roles disappeared.
The San Antonio reductions follow a similar pattern elsewhere in the state. In August, Sinclair abruptly removed both morning anchor positions at CBS Austin’s This Morning program. Those layoffs came without prior public notice, echoing the quiet approach taken with the San Antonio cuts.
Sinclair, one of the nation’s largest owners of local television stations, has faced ongoing financial pressure as advertising revenue shifts away from traditional broadcast. The company has responded with periodic staff reductions across its portfolio.
The affected San Antonio employees received no public acknowledgment beyond the corporate statement thanking them for their service. Sinclair indicated no further changes are planned for the market at this time, though the company left room for additional restructuring as economic conditions evolve.
