A former co-founder of Elon Musk’s xAI has reportedly dropped $70 million on a sprawling Silicon Valley estate, a purchase that underscores the immense wealth now flowing to top artificial intelligence researchers. Tony Yuhuai Wu, a China-born machine learning specialist, has been linked to the acquisition of Villa de Verano in Hillsborough, according to the South China Morning Post.
The transaction has not been confirmed through public property records. Local reporting describes the buyer only as someone working in the AI industry. Still, the reported figure would make it Hillsborough’s priciest residential sale of 2026.
Wu’s career trajectory mirrors the meteoric rise of AI research itself. He joined Google and DeepMind, conducted postdoctoral work at Stanford, and became one of the founding members of xAI in 2023. His research focused on mathematical reasoning, theorem proving, and building machines that can solve complex problems.
His academic path began at the University of New Brunswick, where he finished a mathematics degree in 2015. He then pursued doctoral work at the University of Toronto under Roger Grosse and Jimmy Ba, both prominent machine learning researchers. Along the way, he earned a Google PhD Fellowship and an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship.
At xAI, Wu worked on AI reasoning and contributed to the Grok chatbot. He gained wider visibility after appearing beside Musk during a Grok 3 presentation. However, he announced his departure in February 2026, shortly after xAI integrated with SpaceX.
“It’s time for my next chapter,” Wu wrote on X. “It is an era with full possibilities: a compact team armed with AIs can shift mountains and redefine what’s possible.”
The estate itself spans 12.33 acres at 3000 Ralston Avenue. It includes a 12,404-square-foot main residence, a guesthouse, a sports pavilion, a golf course, a swimming pool, and an outdoor amphitheatre. The property had previously been listed for as much as $88 million before the asking price dropped.
No public confirmation from Wu has surfaced. The connection remains a report, not a verified fact.
