Astrotalk, an online astrology platform based in Noida, has achieved a $1 billion valuation, becoming India’s first spiritual-tech unicorn and the country’s 133rd startup to cross that threshold.
The milestone came through an employee stock ownership plan buyback, not a fresh funding round. More than 100 employees sold shares during the transaction, which the company financed entirely from its own profits.
Founder Puneet Gupta’s path to building a billion-dollar astrology business began with a failed IT services venture. An astrologer had predicted that startup, CodeYeti, would collapse within two years. Gupta initially dismissed the forecast. When the company shut down in 2017 exactly as predicted, he reconsidered his skepticism.
That same year, Gupta launched Astrotalk alongside co-founder Anmol Jain. The platform moved traditional astrology services online, connecting users with verified astrologers through chat, call, and video. Offerings span Vedic astrology, Kundli matching, tarot, numerology, and Vastu.
The company now claims roughly 80 percent of India’s online astrology market. Its user base exceeds 60 million, with thousands of verified practitioners on the platform. Meanwhile, international markets, driven largely by the Indian diaspora, contribute a meaningful share of revenue.
Financially, Astrotalk has avoided the heavy capital dependence typical of consumer internet unicorns. It has raised approximately $34 million total from investors including Left Lane Capital, Elev8 Venture Partners, and QED Investors. Revenue reached ₹651 crore in FY24 with ₹100 crore in profit. By FY25, revenue nearly doubled to around ₹1,200 crore while net profit grew to about ₹250 crore. Current annualized revenue has crossed ₹2,500 crore.
A newer ecommerce division, Astrotalk Store, launched in November 2024 selling gemstones, rudraksha, and other spiritual products. It generated more than ₹140 crore in operating revenue during its first year and now runs at an annual rate of roughly ₹300 crore. Plans include opening the company’s first physical retail outlet in Delhi NCR.
The unicorn status arrives as Astrotalk prepares for a potential public listing, having recently hired a CFO with IPO experience and strengthened governance processes. A public offering could come around 2026-27. The employee buyback, funded entirely through profits, signals that the company can create wealth for workers while building toward that next milestone.
