The company confirmed the job cuts in a statement released May 14, according to MLive. It cited the reason for the job cuts as adjusting “staffing levels with current market conditions and future demand.”
Nexteer employs 3,900 workers in Michigan, according to 2022 data. Of that total, 3,800 are based at the Buena Vista Township site, according to Saginaw Future Inc. The Saginaw County plant is Nexteer’s only U.S. manufacturing location. The company operates 27 manufacturing facilities globally and employed about 13,000 people worldwide as of 2022.
Nexteer supplies electric and hydraulic power steering systems, driveline systems, steering columns, and autonomous driving technologies to autobuildrs worldwide.
The facility was formerly Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems. In 2009, it became Nexteer Automotive in 2009 following GM’s reorganization. In 2010, China-based Pacific Century Motors bought the company from GM. One year later, AVIC Automobile became the majority stakeholder.
Nexteer is the second-largest employer in Saginaw County, with only Covenant HealthCare providing more jobs, according to Saginaw Future.
