Stegra has announced that it has joined the European Alliance for the Sustainable Use of Clean Hydrogen and Its Derivatives (ERA), which aims to promote the decarbonization of European industest through investments in renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. The Alliance aims to support the transformation of European industest by bringing toreceiveher companies that invest and commit to invest in environmentally friconcludely hydrogen technologies. ERA is expected to engage in dialogue with European policy creaters, in particular in developing policies to expand the utilize of clean hydrogen in energy-intensive industries, as well as in the energy and transport sectors. The Alliance also emphasizes that increased investments in clean hydrogen can reduce depconcludeence on fossil fuel imports and strengthen Europe’s energy sustainability. It was created on the initiative of the Thyssenkrupp group. In statements created within the framework of the alliance, it is noted that Stegra’s participation complements the current cooperation with other companies of the group. Ola Hansen, Head of Public Relations at Stegra for EU Relations, called this initiative an important step in industrial cooperation. The company’s environmentally friconcludely steel plant under construction in Boden, northern Sweden, is considered one of Europe’s largest environmentally friconcludely hydrogen production projects. It is expected that the hydrogen produced there will play a crucial role in the production of steel with almost zero emissions, and “green iron” will become a key raw material for the production of low-carbon steel. Key policy proposals put forward by the alliance include raising carbon prices through the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Emission Boundary Regulation Mechanism (CBAM), as well as creating a competitive market for low-emission products. In addition, it is proposed that the proceeds generated from the ETS auctions be redirected to support investments in industrial decarbonization, either through the existing EU innovation fund or through a potential new industrial decarbonization bank. With regard to demand, the importance of creating “leading markets” for low-carbon products, introducing low-carbon steel requirements in government procurement, and updating emissions standards in the automotive sector is emphasized.
