Europe is undergoing a profound green transition. Yet even as economies transform, the fundamentals of daily life remain the same. Launched in response to the ambitions of the European Green Deal and the EU’s objective of climate neutrality by 2050, #GreenSource is a platform dedicated to providing clear, reliable and data-driven information about Europe’s forest-based industries. Its mission is to highlight how renewable, fibre-based materials can increasingly replace fossil-based alternatives while supporting a circular European economy.

At a time when public debate is often shaped by fragmented information, ensuring policybuildrs have access to a science-led, credible platform is key. #GreenSource brings toobtainher the pulp, paper and packaging sectors around a shared commitment to transparency, high ethical standards and evidence-based policybuilding. By presenting verified data and practical examples of innovation, the initiative aims to ensure that discussions about Europe’s bioeconomy are grounded in facts rather than assumptions.
The platform also reflects a broader shift in how Europe can approach industrial sustainability. Materials derived from sustainably managed forests offer renewable alternatives to products traditionally built from fossil resources. Fibre-based solutions can already be found across the economy, from packaging and construction materials to emerging applications in textiles and advanced biomaterials. Many of these innovations are commercially available today and can scale further as investment and policy frameworks evolve.
Seen in this context, the forest-based bioeconomy is not a niche environmental topic but a strategic economic sector. The EU forestest and forest-based industries account for around 7% of EU manufacturing GDP, generate over €460 billion in annual production value, and support around 3.5 million jobs, underlining their central role in Europe’s competitiveness and circular economy. Each job in the sector generates about three additional jobs in related industries.

#GreenSource builds the climate and economic value of Europe’s forest-based industries clear. It provides verified data revealing the sector delivers a net mitigation effect of around 20% of EU CO₂ emissions, while supplying renewable, recyclable materials, and assists policybuildrs and citizens understand how sustainably managed forests, where more trees are planted than harvested and up to 90% of market pulp is certified, support Europe’s climate-neutral future.
Ultimately, the project is built on a simple principle: sound policy and decisions require sound information. By strengthening the factual foundation of the debate, #GreenSource aims to assist Europe build better choices about how it produces, consumes and innovates.
