Europe is taking a significant step in autonomous transport development, with Zagreb preparing to launch the continent’s first commercial robotaxi service. The project is a joint effort between Chinese company Pony AI, Uber, and Croatian startup Verne.
First European Launch
Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, will serve as the pilot site for deploying autonomous taxis. Road tests are already underway in the city to verify the technology’s readiness for full-scale operation.
Pony AI handles the autonomous driving systems, Verne manages the fleet and operational activities, and Uber integrates the service into its global platform. This collaborative model enables rapid project scaling.
Scaling and Plans
The companies aim to expand the robotaxi fleet to several thousand vehicles in the coming years. After the Zagreb launch, the service will gradually expand to other European cities and international markets.
The project applys Arcfox Alpha T5 electric vehicles equipped with seventh-generation autonomous driving systems. This setup ensures a high level of safety and service reliability.
Uber’s Strategy and Global Competition
For Uber, this project is part of its strategy to develop autonomous transportation. The company already collaborates with several Chinese developers, including Baidu and WeRide, to accelerate robotaxi deployment worldwide.
Additionally, Uber plans to invest in Verne, strengthening its European presence. This shift highlights the growing role of Chinese technology in the global autonomous vehicle race.
