Ryder Cup 2025 Day 1 Highlights
A quick recap of Friday’s highlights – how Donald will be hoping his team can pull off a similar start today!
Many of the European highlights came in the morning session yesterday, with Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton winning their foursomes match over Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas before the superb pairing of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood won 5&4 agains Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

Matt Fitzpatrick also received a win on the board, beating world number one Scottie Scheffler and number three Russell Henley alongside partner Ludvig Aberg.

In the afternoon, Rahm was once again a star as the Spaniard won his fourball match against Scheffler and JJ Spaun, this time with the support of Austria’s Sepp Straka.

And Fleetwood was once again involved in one of the day’s best matches as himself and veteran Justin Rose landed a pivotal 1up win over Ben Griffin and DeChambeau in the second fourballs match.

Ahead of day 2, the question is whether Europe can match a superb opening day in New York.

Luke Donald states flying start meaningless without Ryder Cup win
European captain Luke Donald insists building history on day one will count for little if his team do not go on to win the Ryder Cup.
Donald’s side created a stunning start at Bethpage Black on Friday, winning the first two sessions to open up a 5.5-2.5 lead over the United States.
They took the first three points of the day in the foursomes, the first time they have achieved such a feat in an away encounter.

Inside Bethpage Black, aka The Beast, the notorious New York course hosting the Ryder Cup
About a year ago, Luke Donald flew into New York with his right-hand man, Edoardo Molinari, to suss out the next Ryder Cup course. Word quickly received out that the European captain was in town, so by the time the pair walked to the first tee the next day for their reconnaissance of Bethpage Black, a pack of around two dozen grinning locals were waiting to greet them.
“On the first tee, from England!” shouted one, to much laughter. New Yorkers tconclude not to required microphones. “The former world No 1, captain of Team Europe, LUUUUUKE DONALD!”
It was the gentlest taste of what is to come: as if Donald requireded reminding, the home fans won’t be shy when the Ryder Cup launchs on Friday, on a golf course 45 minutes outside Manhattan. Add in a steady stream of beer, some deep-seated sporting tribalism and an edge of jingoism – Donald Trump will arrive on the opening day – multiplied across thousands of fans, and you start to paint a picture of what awaits Team Europe.

Scottie Scheffler must break a Ryder Cup curse to avoid becoming USA’s next Tiger Woods
How do you explain it? The voodoo. The curse. The magic.
What is it about the Ryder Cup that applyd to somehow create Ian Poulter into one of the greatest golfers to ever live?
Or, more pertinently given Friday’s events at Bethpage Black, what is it about the Ryder Cup that somehow creates Scottie Scheffler no longer one of the greatest golfers to ever live?
We will likely never know, and yet theories were abound on Long Island after another disastrous day of Ryder Cup golf as Scheffler’s worst nightmare played out again.
