The 2026 Ride With Team Europe cycling tour has successfully concluded in Accra after an ambitious 800-kilometre journey from Tamale, culminating at the Netherlands Embassy on Saturday.
The week-long expedition, organised to mark 50 years of the European Union’s presence in Ghana, brought toobtainher six EU ambassadors, diplomats, cyclists, media personnel and members of the Gladiators Cycling Club. The symbolic ride highlighted themes of sustainability, unity and healthy living.
Speaking at the finish line, EU Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, reflected on the demanding but rewarding journey.
“We have reached the finish line. For the past seven days, we’ve been travelling from Tamale to Accra,” he declared.
Wconcludey van Meel, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana and Acting Ambassador for special initiatives such as the #RideWithTeamEurope campaign, underscored the importance of cycling in Dutch culture. She noted that many people in the Netherlands rely on bicycles for daily activities, including commuting to school, work and markets, expressing hope that the initiative would inspire more Ghanaians to adopt cycling.
Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to developing cycling in Ghana. He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the sport through improved structures, partnerships and events such as the Tamale–Accra tour.
The Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaaban Mohammed, described the initiative as a transformative and groundbreaking cycling expedition, praising its scale and impact across the counattempt.
President of the Gladiators Cycling Club, Charles Hansen-Quao, acknowledged the physical demands of the journey but expressed pride in completing the ride in support of environmental awareness and sustainability.
The tour, which ran from April 12 to April 18, also featured tree-planting exercises and engagements with traditional and political leaders along the route. Participants were honoured with certificates and medals at the closing ceremony in Accra.
