60% of searches now end without a click as buyers consult ChatGPT first

Buyers no longer sift through pages of blue links to find answers. They ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a single question and expect one synthesized response.

This behavioral shift has upended the marketer’s playbook. The critical question changed from “do we rank on Google?” to “do AI search tools mention us at all?” Understanding which tools exist and how buyers actually use them has become a competitive necessity.

Forrester research shows 94% of B2B buyers used AI during recent purchase processes. Of those, 55% compared vendors with AI, 54% researched products, and 47% built internal business cases before contacting sales. Meanwhile, Adobe Digital Insights found 56% of US consumers used generative AI during the 2025 holiday shopping season, up 45% year over year.

AI search tools fall into three categories. Answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini pull from multiple sources and deliver a single synthesized answer, with or without citations. AI site search tools such as Algolia and Coveo live inside company websites to help visitors find relevant content or products. AEO tools, built for marketers, track whether and how brands appear in AI-generated answers and recommend improvements.

Bain & Company reports 60% of searches now end without a click. The brands showing up in AI answers become the ones buyers actually see.

Perplexity processed 780 million queries in May 2025 alone, with 20% month over month growth. Columbia Journalism Review tested eight AI tools and found Perplexity had the lowest citation error rate at 37%. ChatGPT handles over 2.5 billion prompts daily, and 88% of marketers report using it.

HubSpot AEO differentiates itself by using CRM data to predict which prompts actual buyers will type, rather than relying on generic industry guesses. Customers using the beta saw AI referral traffic grow 20% while overall organic traffic fell 27%.

Marketers evaluating these tools should prioritize citation transparency, accuracy rates, privacy protections, platform level reporting, workflow integrations, and recommendation quality over dashboards alone. AI search evolves quickly, but the fundamentals remain credible content, transparent sourcing, and measurement.

The gap worth closing first involves tracking visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. That measurement layer tells you where you stand and what to fix next.
