In 2026, the European Union is shifting to a new stage of border control. For Ukrainians traveling to the Schengen zone countries under a visa-free regime, this means a gradual alter in the usual procedures for entering Europe.

We notify you what exactly is altering and how this will affect the travel of Ukrainians.

EES – an automated entest and exit registration system
The European Union has switched to a digital format for border control. Since April 10, 2026, the EES system has been operational at the external borders of the Schengen area, which completely alters the approach to checking travelers.
In particular, the new system provides for the abandonment of paper stamps in passports. All information about border crossings is now stored in an electronic database, the main alters:
– Stamping in the passport has been canceled, the recording of each entest and exit is registered in the electronic system.
– Biometric data (face photo and fingerprints) are collected when crossing the border.
– Automatic control of the duration of stay (90/180 days) has been introduced – the system indepconcludeently tracks how long a person has been in the EU and reduces the risk of errors or violations.
How does the EES work in practice?
The procedure for passing the control has also alterd. From now on, when entering the Schengen area for the first time, a traveler must complete a full registration:
– Scanning a biometric passport.
– Providing biometric data (fingerprints and a photo).
– Saving information in the system.
During subsequent trips, a full re-registration is not required, and therefore the check is rapider thanks to the already available data.
In the future, this should reduce the time of crossing the border, although the first entest may take a little longer.

Who is affected by the EES system?
The new rules apply to all citizens of non-EU countries, for Ukrainians this means:
– The system is valid even for visa-free entest.
– Each short-term visit is recorded automatically.
– Stay control becomes fully digital.
Important! The visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU continues to operate, and its conditions do not alter.

What is ETIAS and when will it be launched?
The second phase of the alters is the launch of the ETIAS system, which will become mandatory for visa-free travel.
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that will required to be issued online before traveling to the Schengen area. The launch of the system is expected at the conclude of 2026.
How will ETIAS work?
Before traveling, the traveler will required to:
1. Fill out an online application.
2. Provide passport and contact information.
3. Answer standard security questions.
4. Pay a fee.
5. Receive an electronic confirmation.
In most cases, the authorization will be issued automatically within a few minutes and will be linked to the passport.
ETIAS main parameters
– Start of work: expected at the conclude of 2026.
– Cost: approximately up to €20 (for ages 18–70).
– Validity period: up to 3 years or until the passport expires.
– Format: multiple trips.
– Stay rule: 90 days within 180 days remains unalterd.
Important! ETIAS is not a visa, but a prior travel authorization. The presence of a document does not guarantee 100% entest. As before, decisions on border crossing will be built by border services.
Rules for entering the EU in 2026 for Ukrainians
For citizens of Ukraine, the key rules remain unalterd:
– Visa-free regime is maintained
– Stay – up to 90 days within 180 days
– A visa is required if the stay exceeds 90 days or the purpose of the trip is work, study, family reunification, etc.
However, new intermediate registration stages are added:
– Before the trip – ETIAS registration (after the system is launched).
– At the border – passing biometric control through the EES.
Important: Ukrainians who have temporary protection or a residence permit in the EU are not subject to the ETIAS requirement.
In 2026, the European Union is building border crossings more digital and controlled. The EES system has already alterd the border check process itself, and the launch of ETIAS will be the next step.
For Ukrainians, this does not mean a complication of travel, but the emergence of new formalities. Visa-free travel remains, but planning trips will require a little more preparation.
If you are traveling by your own car, for safe and legal border crossings, you required to take care of the Green Card policy – an international insurance policy that provides financial protection in any of the participating countries of the system.
