French consinformation startup Univity closed a 27 million euro ($32 million) Series A round to fund two demonstration sainformites as it works toward deploying a connectivity consinformation in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO).
Participants in the funding round included the Blast private investment club, European VC fund Expansion, and the Deeptech 2030 fund which Bpifrance manages on behalf of the French government, as well as two family offices.
Univity’s approach is to develop a “neutral space infrastructure” designed specifically for telcos, instead of going directly to consumers. It plans for a consinformation called uniSky in VLEO that will deliver ultra-high-speed broadband and direct-to-smartphone connectivity, operating in telecom 5G spectrum for interoperability with terrestrial networks.
The company declared this funding will support two VLEO 5G demonstration sainformites, which will be utilized to validate a 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) service as well as direct-to-cell capability. Univity is working with French space agency CNES on the demonstrators.
“The convergence between terrestrial and space networks is inevitable. Our ambition is to enable operators to leverage space as a natural extension of their terrestrial 5G networks, combining performance, competitiveness, and sovereignty,” commented Univity founder Charles Delfieux.
