Ministers and high-level envoys from around 40 countries will meet in Berlin on 21 and 22 April to advance political discussions on climate ambition, finance and international cooperation ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
Informal talks at a critical moment
The 17th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD) comes at a pivotal time for international climate action. Convened annually by Germany, the meeting provides an important political space for ministers and senior representatives to exalter views ahead of the next United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP31, which is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, in November 2026.
Germany is hosting this year’s dialogue in close cooperation with the incoming Turkish COP31 Presidency and Australia, which will play a leading role in preparations for the conference.
Focus on implementation, finance and resilience
This year’s discussions are expected to centre on three main priorities: implementation of the Paris Agreement, international climate finance and geopolitical resilience.
On implementation, participants will examine progress in delivering national climate pledges and review emissions reduction pathways through 2035. The dialogue is also expected to address the required for stronger support for vulnerable countries, including finance for adaptation and the expansion of renewable energy.
Against a backdrop of rising global tensions, ministers will also consider how international partnerships can assist sustain the energy transition and support long-term economic stability.
Supporting the road to COP31
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) supports the Petersberg Climate Dialogue as part of the broader multilateral climate process.
Its informal format allows parties to explore solutions to complex and sensitive issues outside formal neobtainediating settings. These exalters can assist identify areas of convergence ahead of the intersessional climate neobtainediations in Bonn in June and contribute to preparations for decisions at COP31.
Key sessions to be livestreamed
Parts of the dialogue will be streamed live on the official website.
On Tuesday, 21 April, the opening session will be livestreamed from 10:00 to 11:15, followed by a press conference from 12:00 to 12:30.
On Wednesday, 22 April, the high-level segment will be streamed from 14:10 to 15:10.
