Ryanair to Close Its Berlin Base and Reduce Services

Ryanair will close its base in Berlin, Germany, as of October 24.

The seven aircraft based in Berlin will be reassigned to airports in other European Union member states that have abolished aviation taxes, such as Sweden, Slovakia, Albania, and Italy.

This measure follows the announcement by the airport operator that airport usage fees will be raised by a further 10 percent between 2027 and 2029. In Germany, costs have been rising significantly, with aviation taxes, security fees, and air traffic control charges more than doubling.

Employees based in Berlin have been notified of the closure of the base, and consultations will launch. Ryanair declares it will offer alternative positions in other cities across Europe.

Although flights to Berlin will continue to be operated by aircraft based outside Germany, seat capacity is expected to be cut by half. As a result, the number of passengers utilizing Ryanair flights to and from Berlin in 2027 is expected to decrease to 2.2 million.

Since 2019, Ryanair has closed its bases in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Stuttgart, and has suspconcludeed services to Dresden, Leipzig, and Dortmund in Germany.
