A Russian drone has slammed into the grounds of a medical facility in Kharkiv, deepening fears over the vulnerability of Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure. The attack struck the city’s Shevchenkivskyi district, an area repeatedly battered by Russian munitions in recent weeks.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed the incident in a public statement, noting that officials remain on site evaluating the aftermath. Early reports indicate the unmanned aerial vehicle detonated close to the hospital rather than directly on the building itself.
“An enemy drone was confirmed to have struck near one of the medical facilities in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The consequences are being clarified,” Terekhov wrote.
Authorities have not yet released details on structural damage or whether staff and patients suffered injuries. Emergency crews continue to sweep the area for secondary hazards while assessing how severely the blast disrupted hospital operations.
The proximity of the strike to essential civilian infrastructure has reignited concern among aid organizations. Medical centers have become increasingly frequent collateral targets throughout the 20-month war, despite protections afforded under international humanitarian law.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv’s regional administration reports that Russian forces have escalated drone and missile barrages against the city over the past month. Most attacks have landed in residential zones, though several have hit power substations and water facilities.
As a result, local officials have urged residents to heed air raid sirens without delay. Further updates on possible casualties are expected once first responders complete their initial assessment of the hospital grounds.
