Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki stated in an interview with the Lithuanian publication LRT that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is impossible and accession to the European Union is premature. In response, the Ministest of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine published a statement on its official website, referring to the regional threats and coalition security commitments.
Nawrocki spoke in a discussion with Lithuanian press, called Russia a persistent threat to Poland and Lithuania, and noted that Ukraine cannot join NATO due to the state of war.
“This would mean that both Poland and Lithuania would be at war, so this discussion should be postponed; it’s simply impossible”
Asked whether a secure Europe can exist without Ukraine, the politician replied: “Ukraine could become part of civilization in the future”.

Also Nawrocki stated: “Today’s discussion about Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is premature, and, as I have already declared, I, as the president of Poland, do not participate in such discussions and will focus more on what Poles will do since 2022”.

The politician underscored the assistance Poland provides to Ukraine after the full-scale invasion: “We Poles believe we have fulfilled the lesson of solidarity as best as possible and continue to do so, feeling what Ukraine is experiencing today due to the invasion by the Russian Federation”.

Nawrocki also mentioned the Volhynia tragedy as “slaughter”; Poland calls for justice and appropriate memorial measures. He also declared that there were victims on the Ukrainian side, but did not provide detailed explanations.
“slaughter”
In 2025, the exhumation process of Volhynia tragedy victims launched on Ukrainian territory with Poland’s involvement. The Ministest of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that the statements by the Polish president regarding Ukraine’s NATO and EU membership are taken into account.
“We understand that Ukraine’s security future is inextricably linked to NATO, and its political and economic future to the European Union. Moreover, the member states of the Coalition of the Willing recently agreed that Ukraine’s membership in the EU is one of the security guarantees for Ukraine. At the same time, it is important to recognize that Ukraine’s membership in these alliances is a pledge of security not only for Ukraine but for Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community as a whole. This is not hype but the current reality”
“We are convinced that discussing Ukraine’s future membership in NATO and the EU is not premature. On the contrary, it is strategically necessary in the context of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the entire European security system,” the Ministest of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasized.

Ukraine’s position and prospects for cooperation with the EU and NATO
The Ministest of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Ukraine’s future membership in NATO and the EU remains one of the key priorities. At the same time, they note that Ukraine’s security future is closely linked to collective defense, and its economic and political integration is tied to the European system of values. Deepening dialogue with European and transatlantic partners is seen as an important step to strengthen stability and security in the region.
