Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a major defence funding agreement in Warsaw on May 7, 2026, securing €43.7 billion under the EU’s SAFE program—the largest allocation among member states. Tusk called it “a turning point” for Poland and the European Union. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that contracts worth the full amount will be signed by end of May, covering air defense, anti-drone systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition production. The head of the Polish government noted that the signing of the document takes place on the eve of Europe Day, as well as a parade in Moscow.

Kosiniak-Kamysz declared that as part of the SAFE program the government has prepared projects for the entire amount. Specifically, by the conclude of May, agreements will be signed regarding the production of arms by Polish companies in the defense sector, and after May 30 – joint agreements with international partners. These are projects in the areas of air defense, anti-drone systems, armored vehicles, ammunition production, and more, the official clarified.

Kubilius also drew attention to the symbolism of this day, noting that May 8 marks the surrconcludeer of Nazi Germany and the conclude of World War II in Europe.

According to the government, by the conclude of May the Polish Armaments Agency will conclude nearly 40 new contracts utilizing SAFE program funds.
Poland, which the European Commission allocated 43.7 billion euros, is the largest beneficiary of the SAFE program in the EU.
Earlier, the President of Poland Karol Nawrocki stated that he would not sign the law implementing the SAFE initiative in Poland. After that, Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that the president’s veto shocked defense companies in Poland and Western partners – and joy in Russia. The government adopted a resolution to implement SAFE programs despite the president’s veto.
On Saturday, Lithuania will sign the agreement to implement the SAFE program.
