Vienna’s regtech scene just landed a significant boost. Signteq, a startup unifying identity verification, compliance checks, and digital signatures into a single platform, has secured a seven-figure investment round backed by OpenAI’s Peter Steinberger.
Steinberger, the Austrian software entrepreneur behind PSPDFKit and the open-source AI agent project OpenClaw, joined OpenAI earlier this year. His investment connects two rapidly merging domains: digital identity infrastructure and autonomous AI agents.
The funding round also includes Runtastic co-founder René Giretzlehner and Franz-Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau Beteiligungs GmbH. Compass-Verlag, an existing shareholder since 2024, increased its stake. Exact figures and valuation remain undisclosed.
Founded in Vienna in 2019 and led by Simon Schnabl, signteq consolidates processes that many companies still manage through separate vendors. Its platform covers digital identity verification, KYC and KYB checks, PEP and sanctions screening, plus qualified electronic signatures. Each module works independently or as part of a complete digital onboarding flow.
The company processes all data within the EU and has audited its identification procedure against European standard ETSI TS 119 461 v2. Clients span Raiffeisen Banking Group, BAWAG, BTV, BKS Bank, Wüstenrot, digital wealth manager froots, crowdinvesting platform Conda, and crypto firms Cryptonow and WhiteBIT. Wiener Wohnen, Europe’s largest municipal housing manager, also uses the technology.
Meanwhile, upcoming EU regulations create strong tailwinds. By late 2026, every member state must offer a European Digital Identity Wallet. Signteq plans to integrate wallet functionality directly into its platform, allowing companies to adopt wallet-based processes without rebuilding existing workflows. The eIDAS 2.0 framework and the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, effective July 2027, will further pressure regulated firms to link digital identity with compliance.
Part of the new capital funds a business line called Know Your Agent. As AI agents increasingly execute transactions and contracts autonomously, signteq aims to build infrastructure that verifies an agent’s identity, mandate, and accountability. Financial institutions, enterprises, and public authorities represent the primary target market. Initial expansion focuses on Germany and Switzerland.
