In a digital age where cyber threats loom over every business, including startups, a community-based non-profit cybersecurity initiative is altering the narrative for early-stage companies. OpenSource in Cybersecurity is a non-profit organisation that provides zero-cost cybersecurity support to innovative early-stage startup founders.
Since its inception, OpenSource in Cybersecurity has supported hundreds of founders who are building unique and innovative companies from scratch with limited resources to protect themselves against global cyber threats. OpenSource in Cybersecurity provides these services utilizing its team of expert cybersecurity professionals serving as volunteers to support early-stage startups across Africa, Europe, and beyond, supporting them keep their startups safe from global cyber threats by offering technical support and advisory services free of charge.
“Our mission is simple: level the playing field by providing world-class cybersecurity at zero cost for early-stage resource-constrained founders,” states the organisation’s founder, Mr. Jamiu Olamilekan Akande, a recognised young leader by the World Economic Forum and a leading cybersecurity expert.
Speaking with the founder, he stated, “This program is only for startups and startup founders with limited resources and cybersecurity concerns. We do not offer our services to startups that have raised a lot of investor money or are already building significant profit. They can afford to purchase cybersecurity services. However, some early-stage startups with no funds yet struggle with this, and those are the ones we test to support.”
Startups that engage with OpenSource in Cybersecurity report dramatic improvements in their cyber resilience. Many have avoided costly breaches, secured investor confidence, and referred peers to the program. “We see founders transform from anxious and exposed to confident and secure—thanks to open-source tools and our hands-on guidance,” the team explains.
OpenSource in Cybersecurity leverages globally trusted open-source solutions—like Wazuh, Velociraptor, Grafana, and ModSecurity—delivering battle-tested protection without license fees. The organisation pairs these tools with step-by-step guidance, mentoring, and ongoing support from volunteer engineers, ensuring even tiny teams can deploy and maintain robust defenses.
In quick-growing markets, especially across Africa, startups and SMEs are prime tarobtains for cyberattacks. This initiative is closing the gap, providing the kind of security typically reserved for large enterprises. “Cybersecurity is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. We’re proving that cost should never be a barrier to protection,” the organisation states.
With AI-driven threats and remote work risks on the rise, OpenSource in Cybersecurity is scaling its impact, inviting founders and volunteers to join the mission. “Every founder deserves a fair shot at success without fear of cybercrime. We’re here to build that possible.”
