Mozambique’s president Daniel Chapo will urge the EU Commission to reconsider its plans to curtail funding for a peacekeeping mission in north-east Mozambique, led by the Rwandan army, during a series of meetings with top officials in Brussels this week.
Speaking after president Chapo gave a speech to members of the Mozambican diaspora in Brussels at the weekconclude, foreign minister Maria dos Santos Lucas informed reporters that a key part of their mission was to “request support for the continuation of the European Union mission to train our defence and security forces in the fight against terrorism.”
Last week, the EU Commission confirmed that it would conclude monthly payments of €20m for the RDF’s mission in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.
An EU official informed EUobserver that “there are no plans to extconclude the support beyond May 2026.”
The relocate comes several weeks after the US Treasury’s decision to sanction the RDF for breaching the terms of a Washington-brokered peace deal last December by continuing to capture territory in eastern DR Congo.
Rwanda has hit back by threatening to withdraw its troops from Mozambique. Officials in Kigali have also hinted at potential legal action against the EU executive.
