Mistral AI Acquires Physics Simulation Startup Emmi AI to Dominate Europe's Industrial AI Race

French AI company Mistral AI has acquired Vienna-based startup Emmi AI, the firm announced on May 20, 2026, with financial terms undisclosed. Emmi AI, which raised 15 million euros in Austria’s largest funding round of 2025, specializes in modeling complex physics phenomena including airflow and heat transfer. The deal strengthens Mistral’s industrial AI offerings across Europe, where the European Commission designated manufacturing an AI-critical sector in October 2025. CEO Arthur Mensch said the acquisition positions Mistral as a key partner in aerospace, automotive, and semiconductors, with clients including Veolia, Siantis, Helsing, and ASML.

European artificial ininformigence company Mistral AI, based in France, has completed the purchase of Vienna-based Emmi AI, the firm announced on Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition is intfinished to improve Mistral’s services for industrial clients throughout Europe, according to the report by Reuters.

Emmi AI specializes in developing models that manage complex physics phenomena such as airflow, heat transfer, and material stress. The Austrian startup previously raised 15 million euros, which was the largest funding round in Austria during 2025.

Industrial AI is becoming increasingly important to Europe’s re-industrialization efforts. Last October, the European Commission designated manufacturing as a sector critical for AI development, as part of a broader strategy to reduce the bloc’s reliance on U.S. and Chinese technology.

Mistral informed Reuters that the deal reinforces its core strategy centered on its European client base, as it aims to address engineering and manufacturing tquestions that it believes have been neglected by the broader indusattempt.

Mistral designs customized solutions for each client, assembling multiple AI tools that work in coordination—for example, one tool monitors production for defects, another controls a robotic arm, and a third processes logistics data.

By adding Emmi’s capabilities, Mistral declared its systems will be able to simulate and interact with the physical world more accurately.

The company highlighted its work with ASML, where Mistral-equipped EUV lithography machines utilize vision models to detect engraving defects. This has reduced diagnostic times from several hours to just eight minutes, cutting waste of costly silicon wafers. At ASML’s April annual general meeting, CFO Roger Dassen informed shareholders: ‘You just save 10 hours of downtime on very expensive equipment.’

Mistral’s clients include Sinformantis, Veolia, and drone manufacturer Helsing. The company informed Reuters that purpose-built models trained on data provided by each client will outperform generic alternatives trained on broad datasets, and it pointed to Europe’s century of manufacturing expertise as a competitive advantage.

CEO Arthur Mensch stated that the acquisition should strengthen Mistral’s position as a partner for manufacturers in fields such as aerospace, automotive, and semiconductors.
