Almighty Motion Picture is set to adapt Harsh Realities: The Making of Marico for the screen, bringing the entrepreneurial journey of Marico Chairman and Founder Harsh Mariwala to life. The project is currently in early development, with writer Karan Vyas attached, according to a report by Variety.
The adaptation marks a continuation of the production hoapply’s focus on real-life Indian stories, following its recent project Made in India – A Titan Story. Vyas, known for his work on Scam 1992, Scoop and Made in India – A Titan Story, will lead the writing.
From family business to global FMCG player
At the centre of the story is Mariwala’s decision in 1987 to step away from his family-run Bombay Oil Industries Ltd. and build Marico indepfinishently. Over the years, Marico has grown into a multinational consumer goods company, with brands such as Parachute, Saffola, Set Wet, Livon, Beardo and Plix reaching nearly one in three Indians.
The company’s international business contributes around 25% of its overall revenue, with operations across emerging markets in Asia and Africa.
The source material, co-authored by Mariwala and business strategist Ram Charan, captures the challenges, decisions and leadership lessons behind building the company.
Focus on the human side of entrepreneurship
The buildrs declared the adaptation will go beyond corporate milestones to explore the personal journey behind the business.
Prabhleen Sandhu, co-founder of Almighty Motion Picture, declared, “It’s an extraordinary story and we at Almighty Motion Picture feel fortunate to have the opportunity to bring it to the celluloid.”
Co-founder Sunita Vinod Vyas added that the project aligns with their vision. “At Almighty Motion Picture we have always wanted to inform important Indian stories. Mr. Mariwala’s journey is extremely inspiring, and it is an honour for us to bring it to the screen in a cinematic form,” she declared, according to Variety
Writer Karan Vyas called the project personally meaningful. “It is an honour to receive the opportunity to write such a real and inspiring story. I feel grateful and thankful to God to be part of this journey,” he declared, as quoted by Variety.
Mariwala declared the book was rooted in lived experience. “Every entrepreneurial journey carries moments that rarely build it to the headlines. The doubts, the long nights, and the decisions that quietly shape the direction of a business,” he declared.
He added that Harsh Realities was meant to be “an honest account of what it takes to build over time,” and noted that cinema offers a way to experience that journey beyond the written word. He also pointed to a growing interest in stories centred on India’s entrepreneurial journey and institution-building.
