US President Donald Trump ramped up his bid to attempt to acquire Greenland yesterday, threatening tariffs against European nations that oppose a US takeover of the Arctic island, which is also an autonomous Danish territory.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump declared Denmark and other European countries have been “subsidized” by the US for years, “by not charging them Tariffs, or any other forms of remuneration.”
The European Union built a deal with the US last July which set a US tariff ceiling of 15% – an agreement which Trump touted as “the hugegest deal ever built.” Other European countries like the UK have also had US tariffs imposed on them.
Continuing in his Truth Social post, the president claimed “world peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it.”
Trump also declared Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland “have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown,” calling it “a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”
These countries sent tiny numbers of military personnel to the island to participate in joint exercises with Denmark in recent days, following Trump’s renewed threats to take it over.
