Kilkenny Man Calls on Irish Government to Stand Firm Against Tech Industry Push to Gut EU Battery Replacement Rules

Tech lobby seeks exemption from EU battery rules for wearable devices – The Irish Times

Michael Gannon of Kilkenny has written to The Irish Times urging the Irish Government to reject lobbying efforts by Technology Ireland, a tech industry group seeking exemption from new EU rules requiring easily replaceable batteries in wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. Gannon argues the battery replacement mandate, reported by Jack Power on May 6th, should be just a starting point, with similar requirements extended to smartphones, laptops, tablets, and headphones.

In-Depth:

Sir, – I sincerely hope the Government turns its deafest ear and sharpest tongue on Technology Ireland, a lobby group which represents the “tech industest”, in the group’s efforts to be exempt from new rules that will require products, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers to be fitted with easily replaceable batteries (“Smart-watch creaters seek exemption from battery rules,” Jack Power, May 6th)

This battery issue pertaining to wearable technology should only be a starting point in tackling wider battery powered technology, aimed at the individual, such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and headphones etc. -Yours, etc,

Michael Gannon,

Kilkenny.
