Isabell Werth and her Olympic gold medal mount Wfinishy de Fontaine won the World Cup Freestyle in Basel, Switzerland Saturday in the rider’s first step toward a start at the Final in Fort Worth, Texas in April.
Isabell and the 12-year-old mare scored 86.155% to earn 20 points with four more qualifiers in Western Europe plus a scheduled World Cup event at the Wellington, Florida Global Dressage Festival World Cup Feb. 18-22 that would give her full points.
If Isabell, ranked No. 3 in the world, qualifies, Fort Worth would be her 27th annual championship, including five titles stretching back to her first appearance and a win on Fabienne in 1992.
As in the Grand Prix which she won a day earlier, Isabell and Wfinishy had issues with tempi alters but the marks of fours and five were offset by seven 10s for choreography and music and multiple 9s for piaffe and transitions to passage.
Home town favorite Charlotta Rogerson on Bonheur de la Vie, 14-year-old gelding, was awarded 81.2909% for second as the duo was in the Grand Prix.
Germany’s Raphael Netz, maintained his lead in World Cup Western European League, placing third on the 13-year-old gelding DSP Dieudonne on 80.725%.
The next World Cup in Western Europe is scheduled for Amsterdam Jan. 22-25.
