New York [US], September 25 (ANI): India and the European Union signaled a fresh push to expand joint efforts across tourism, hospitality, and transport during high-level talks held this week in New York.
Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, met EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly on Friday. Their conversation centered on unlocking new areas of cooperation within a bilateral relationship that continues to widen in scope.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the engagement in a social media post, noting that both officials reviewed ways to build stronger collaboration in tourism, hospitality, and transport as part of the larger India-EU partnership.
Earlier that day, George welcomed the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on Sea Level Rise. Speaking at the High-Level Plenary Meeting on Addressing the Existential Threats Posed by Sea Level Rise, he pointed to India’s work on coastal resilience, mangrove protection, and disaster-ready infrastructure.
The diplomat also stressed the need for equity and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. He emphasized the role of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the importance of stable maritime zones, and the continuity of statehood for vulnerable island and coastal nations.
On Thursday, George took part in the Peacebuilding Commission Ministerial meeting, which focused on strengthening inclusive state institutions through international peacebuilding support. There, he underlined India’s approach to nation-building, highlighting decentralized power, digital public infrastructure, and the participation of women and youth.
India has committed tens of billions in grants, concessional credit, and capacity-building support, including through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, with priority given to least developed countries and Small Island Developing States.
George also attended a ministerial meeting of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. India’s presence there, according to the external affairs ministry, reflects its long-standing support for the Palestinian people and its continuing partnership with UNRWA.
