US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the EU should fully abandon Russian energy sources, specifically by stopping imports from Turkey and India, which continue to purchase Russian oil. He mentioned that Europe should import $250B of American energy resources annually over the next three years. Although many analysts consider this figure “unrealistic”, Wright believes that 66% of this amount can be achieved by refutilizing to import Russian energy. This includes blocking imports of oil products from Turkey and India, which still purchase large volumes of Russian oil.
Despite US pressure, the EU plans to strengthen ties with India in order to diversify its trade and expand its global influence. Notably, Brussels aims to finalize a free trade agreement with India this year. The parties are also “exploring the establishment of an EU-India Security and Defense Partnership”. As well, the UK has reservations about US President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose tariffs of 50% to 100% on China and India for purchaseing Russian oil.
